500 word essay!

Since I have been in the News Media Practicum one class, I have learned an increasingly amount of new things that will further help me in the future with my major of Communications. In my future I would love to become an anchorwoman for a news station or have even possibly have my own television show. And so for me to reach my goal I have a lot of important things to learn and expand upon. Firstly, I have learned how to come up with and make relevant questions to ask someone when I interview them. It is important to stay on topic with the questions and ask questions that are significant to the topic. I also learned how to get a hold of a professor or student to interview at an appropriate time. Also, How to set up the camera, testing the sound (including the mics), and setting up all of the cords. I have even been able to learn how to roll up the cords the properly the “Bradford way,” thanks to the help and guidance of Dakota. Dakota also showed me an important tip needed for setting up the camera. The trick of white balancing a camera. In order to do so you need to put up a white piece of paper in front of the camera, focus on it and push the white balance button and it should allow the camera to shoot the “true” color of white. I additionally learned how to shoot correct B-roll video for a segment and to come up with good ideas for segments. By attending Anna’s news show I learned the behind the scenes part to a show. It was very intriguing to see how the show is all set up. I sent Anna three stories to use for the news show. It is fun writing stories for her to use in the show. Making the show is a long process but in the end it comes out great. Hard work certainly does go a long way. One of my favorite things I have learned is to set up the camera properly with the tripod and everything and how to work the new camera we have for Wellness TV. I love how the new camera has a projector and can project the video taped onto the wall. And most importantly I learned how to edit and upload video using final cut pro. I did have previous experience with editing video back at my high school. I even surprisingly have final cut pro on my laptop. I enjoy editing video a lot and putting in effects into a video and making it come out well. And so now I am able to edit video for a news story and add voiceovers, fades, name tags and etc. to a video segment. I really enjoy and love being apart of Wellness TV and being able to learn about all of the features of broadcast television and journalism. I really do hope to expand my knowledge of all of broadcast television and journalism much more in the future.

  1. I wish I had seen a little more of you this semester! I also had no idea you had knowledge of Final Cut. Did the Wellness TV people know this?

Keep working hard in practicum. I look forward to your contributions.

  2. I was juggling a lot this semester. But next semester I definitely want to help out and be around much more. Yes the Wellness TV did know I had Final Cut experience but they didn't ever ask for my help much. And I offered many times. For the most part it was the older people who were in charge of editing.
